Somebody typed:
Bad News: socialist journalist going off about how racist McLuhan is.
Good News: she started reading Gutenberg Galaxy on my suggestion.
Works for me! It’s a lot better than ‘haven’t read him / have no opinion.’
I responded importantly:
Marshall McLuhan as “HCE” was a racist, anti-Semite, internationalist, nationalist, or any other aspersion you can cast on him – in short, he was a “sinner”, like everybody. And he made sure his “character” hinted at these features. Many auditors of his speeches felt the chill of what he was saying and reported it.
He also was a saint, genius, original, cartoonist, and especially a NOVELIST – in short, a “God”, like everybody. And he made sure his “character” hinted at these features. Many auditors of his speeches felt the thrill of what he was saying and reported it.
If you’re going to discuss McLuhan as an “actor”, then you have to sit at my feet to get these points. Nobody here or anywhere else, including wherever Alex Kuskis is, has ever stated this original perspective, nor has the ability to do an exegesis on the theme.
Andrew McLuhan’s “course” – and anybody else’s course on McLuhan – is undergraduate piffle, and you don’t know nuthin’ until you listen to my radio show. If Andrew doesn’t pass you up the food chain, then ask for your money back.
