First, on Monday, March 2, we visited Frank Zappa at his new home (after he had lived for 5 months in the legendary “Log Cabin” [starting in May ’68 after his run at the Garrick Theater in Greenwich Village from April ’67 to September ’67, which performance made Zappa “famous” where it mattered – New York City] on 7885 Woodrow Wilson Drive at the top of Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Then, on Tuesday, March 3, we visited Joe Dun Sloan who lived next to Watts in Huntington Park. He was the man who made the miraculous “D-Cell” cement cube placed in a bottle of water – which subsequent “water” was very pure and energized – which also slowed down our aging. We used it for the next 30 years. We became such good friends with Joe that we returned a year later and lived with him for 2 months, first week of June ’71 to first week of August ’71. He showed us, through a microscope, the secret of how the D-Cell worked. Then we visited Hawaii in the first week of August ’71.
Then, on Wednesday, March 4 ’70, we went to a daytime lecture by Jiddu Krishnamurti during which I “left my body”. But before the lecture I saw Dave Draper – “Mr. Universe” (1966) – in the audience. I had followed his career in my “jock” days so I introduced myself to him. Smart and pleasant guy, I was surprised that he would be at such a “spiritual” talk. But that’s Los Angeles culture – the coolest city in the universe at the time.
Then, on Wednesday to Friday, after Krishnamurti’s lecture, we spent days and nights with David E. Worcester, the “channel” for Cosmic Awareness from 1967-74 in Seattle, especially enjoying “cruising” the L.A. highway system from midnight on, listening to great L.A. radio. Unbelievable “ecstasy” – never will forget it. Actually, we repeated the experience whenever we returned to L.A. over the next 40 years (many times).
Then, on Saturday night, March 7, the week’s “mountain top” – we attended the concert hopefully you’re listening to right now: Frank Zappa with his new band (“Hot Rats”) after he disbanded “The Mothers of Invention” in August, 1969, the day after the Woodstock weekend and a week after the Charles Manson murders. AND these events occurred about 3 weeks before the Internet started to be built in the first week of September, 1969, in Los Angeles!!
David Worcester picked us up after the concert and we had another “awesome” drive throughout Los Angeles “radio” – proving that we had witnessed one more time that Zappa, once again, had the most elegant and “powerful” band on the planet, for all genres of music.
This whole week had the accumulative effect of Carolyn and I getting married 3 months later on June 9, 1970, in Halifax.
By the way, a year later, after returning from Hawaii to Seatlle, we made our way back to Dartmouth and arrived on August 15, 1971, to be met by the huge flood that swamped downtown Dartmouth. It was also the day that President Richard Nixon inaugurated the “virtual” economy, with the first effect being “STAGFLATION” drowning the financial and economic worlds.
Thirty or so years later they featured the local Newspaper headlines about that Flood on the walls of the Dartmouth Ferry building (Dartmouth terminal), if you recall.
